Windows 7 Build 6801 has the Superbar, too

Microsoft deceived every PDC2008 attendee by saying that the build they handed out, build 6801, didn't have the new "superbar" taskbar replacement that was being shown off throughout the conference.

Well, it turns out that it really is in the build, you just have to be properly authenticated in Redmond. Rafael (withinwindows.com) has decrypted this mystery and has provided a patch (with instructions) that will enable the superbar on any 6801 install.

Windows 7 pre-beta build is 6801

Microsoft announced the availability of a critical security patch yesterday affecting a variety of Windows operating systems.

Interestingly, the Windows 7 pre-beta build, which will be available to developers next Tuesday, also contains the bug. Microsoft stated "Customers running Windows 7 Pre-Beta are encouraged to download and apply the update to their systems. On Windows 7 Pre-Beta systems, the vulnerable code path is only accessible to authenticated users. This vulnerability is not liable to be triggered if the attacker is not authenticated, and therefore would be rated Important."

In a support article Microsoft details some Windows 7 Pre-Beta file information notes. The build string on the notes is 6.1.6801.4106, the same build string that has been screenshotted recently.

It is believed that the 6801 build is a milestone 3 (M3) build released to select customers and partners over the last few months.

Microsoft will be releasing the build to attendees at their professional developers conference next Tuesday.

D-Link DIR-655 Firmware 1.21 Hijacks your Internets

Normally when you think of firmware updates for a router you would expect security updates and bug fixes. Would you ever expect the company that makes the product to try and sell you a subscription for security software using its firmware as a salesperson? I recently ran into this myself when trying to troubleshoot my router. I noticed when trying to go to Google that my router was hijacking DNS and sent me to a website trying to sell me a software subscription. After upgrading your D-link DIR-655 router to the latest firmware you'll see that D-link does this, and calls the hijacking a 'feature.'

More AMD Deneb details leaked to spoil the Core i7 party?

As many of you have already seen Intel Core i7 reviews have hit the web, and most reviews have given the Core i7 the thumbs up. Benchmarks puts the i7 inbetween the Core 2 Quad Extreme series and the SkullTrail Gaming platform. This is an impressive feat for Intel, giving the customer a good excuse to upgrade their system just before Xmas.

So what’s AMD going to do to fight the Core i7?
This is where Deneb comes in. Deneb is AMD’s 45nm quad core competitor. Deneb is the replacement for the currently underperforming Phenom. Although AMD managed a great technical feat with the Phenom managing to create a true quad core cpu Intel’s 2xdual core design still beat it on outright performance.

This month AMD will release its first “Deneb” Phenom CPU’s:
Phenom X4 20550 @ 3.0 Ghz
Phenom 20350 @ 2.8 Ghz
It’s not known yet how well the new cpu’s will perform or their exact specification, but it is known that they will be compatible with current AM2+ motherboards with a bios update, so unlike the Core i7 a motherboard upgrade will not be required.

Its also expected that AMD will bring back its “FX” enthusiast line of CPU’s in 2009 using the AM3 socket.

Muslim Massacre game pulled, along with a genuine apology?

Muslim Massacre is a game which puts players in control of a soldier whose mission it is to rid the world of every last Muslim. Nice. The Internet-only game caused controversy amongst the Muslim population and has now been pulled from the website. In its place is a grovelling apology from the creator of the game. But is it genuine or merely some cowardly backtracking?

Last week saw Muslim Massacre get some mainstream and very public attention after it became an Internet meme. What started as a forum post pointing people towards the game turned in to a media circus, with newspapers and websites all around the world attacking the idea of the game and its creator, Sigvatr.

The game was Web-only, with poor graphics, and so really shouldn’t have got the amount of attention it did. Unfortunately, the subject matter was such that it was always bound to grab the headlines. While some believed it was intended as a parody of American foreign policy, others believed it to be just a downright sick game likely to add to the problem of Islamophobia.

IE8 JavaScript Benchmarks -- It's faster

One of the things immediately noticeable in the latest beta (beta 2) of Internet Explorer 8 was how much faster it is. I thought I'd see for myself how much faster it really is by running a JavaScript benchmark, since that is one thing that really has slowed down IE in comparison to its competitors. Google has put a benchmark it used while creating their Chrome browser live on the web, but it also lets us see how IE8 stacks up against its predecessor. So I ran it.

I ran the test on a 2.8GHz P4 running Windows Vista.

* IE7 benched in at 24, 23 and 29 for an average of 28.6
* IE8 received 37, 40 and 40 for an average of 39

As you can see, IE8 is about 36% faster than IE7 in JavaScript! While it's a good improvement, we can still see that work needs to be done, and will surely increase with every beta release we see of IE8...

Chinese Users Angry over MS WGA

Chinese Internet users have expressed fury at Microsoft's launch of an anti-piracy tool targeting Chinese computer users to ensure they buy genuine software. The "Windows Genuine Advantage" program, which turns the user's screen black if the installed software fails a validation test, is Microsoft's latest weapon in its war on piracy in China, where the vast majority of 200 million computer users are believed to be using counterfeit software, unwittingly or not.

"Why is Microsoft automatically connected with my computer? The computer is mine!" one angry blogger wrote on popular Chinese web portal Sina.com. "Microsoft has no right to control my hardware without my agreement." Another blogger railed over the cost of authorized versions. "If the price of genuine software was lower than the fake one, who would buy the fake one?" he wrote. A visitor to a Beijing internet cafe said Microsoft was violating people's rights. "If, when I'm programing, the computer screen goes black, that will probably cause some important information to be lost. Who will pay me for my loss then?"

WiFi is no longer a viable secure connection

WiFi is no longer secure enough to protect wireless data.

Global Secure Systems has said that a Russian's firm's use of the latest NVidia graphics cards to accelerate WiFi ‘password recovery' times by up to an astonishing 10,000 per cent proves that WiFi's WPA and WPA2 encryption systems are no longer enough to protect wireless data.

David Hobson, managing director of GSS, claimed that companies can no longer view standards-based WiFi transmission as sufficiently secure against eavesdropping to be used with impunity. He also said that the use of VPNs is arguably now mandatory for companies wanting to comply with the Data Protection Act.

He said: “This breakthrough in brute force decryption of WiFi signals by Elcomsoft confirms our observations that firms can no longer rely on standards-based security to protect their data. As a result, we now advise clients using WiFi in their offices to move on up to a VPN encryption system as well.

How to Connect Your Email Address to Your OpenID Account

OpenID is an excellent solution for establishing a single identity for all your online accounts, but many people haven’t even tried it yet. For some, the concept of using a URL address for a login ID instead of the traditional email address is still completely foreign.

However, Email to ID could be what the doctor ordered and what these creatures of habits need. It could also be what OpenID needs in order to expedite wide-spread acceptance as the single sign on identity standard. You can now link your email address (or several of them) to your OpenID and then use that email address (any of them) to log into any online service that supports it! The beauty rests in the simplicity of it all. Best of all, it’s all free and easy to do.

Blue Badge patch for Windows 7 unlocks additional features

On November 2, Rafael Rivera, announced that his indications that the Windows 7 Pre-Beta Build 6801 has some locked additional options, were right. The locked content is primarily related to the UI that actually is one of the most looked-upon things in Windows 7. By his notices, it is not hard to conclude that some contents are locked with reason, because they are far away from stable, even for a pre-beta release.

He explained the type of protection that Win7 PB build 6801 has on his entry, and a way how he got to it. The entry also includes the way to get that content yourself.

By that scheme, an unlocking tool, called the Blue Badge is available for download. This tool should make the already announced steps much easier. Of course, this is still a risky operation, and you take it on your own risk.
These files are to be patched with Blue Badge. The patch is available only for x86 versions; the x64 is still not released.

If case you already have a superbar patch applied, Blue Badge will NOT work.

Please use caution when installing it on your system!

Win 7 Beta 1 targeted for December

Seems as if Microsoft is planning a little Christmas present for all its users with Windows 7 Beta 1 on track to be released a week before Christmas. Nothing is written in stone or been officially announced as of yet but inside sources are reporting December for the launch. Microsoft is planning on a Connect Beta program for Windows 7 so testers keep your eyes open for something to come in the following months involving a possible beta.

When we release the Windows 7 beta we will also be collecting feedback from this (Windows Feedback) panel and asking for participation from a set of Windows 7 beta users. Our current plans call for signing up for the beta to happen in the standard Microsoft manner on Connect. Stay tuned!
