Is it game over for Windows Vista?

Recommended: Click here to check for outdated driversThe saviour that was meant to be, Vista Service Pack 1, isn’t. In some cases it’s actually a performance decrease for an operating system already grinding up-to-date PCs to a halt.
XP fans (for the most part) are happily using Service Pack 3, and Windows 7 (formerly known as Blackcomb) is barking at the gates (or should that be Gates?), ready for an early release in Q3 2009. Windows Vista never stood a chance.
Not much has gone right for Microsoft’s fledgling OS. First it was delayed over three years (initially it was meant to be a stopgap between XP and 7, but then turned into a fully fledged OS), then stories of incompatible software and drivers surfaced. Most recently Vista Service Pack 1 was pulled from Automatic Download. Now that it’s back up and running it could very well be the one and only service pack ever released for the struggling OS.
Microsoft has shot itself in the foot in two ways with regards to Vista. Firstly, it went ahead with the release of Service Pack 3 for the hugely popular Windows XP. Secondly, its progress on Windows 7 and its potential release ahead of schedule has been extensively covered by the media. What this means is that consumers who were reluctant to switch from a perfectly reliable XP SP2 to Vista now have no reason to. They have a fresh upgrade in SP3 that should be able to see them through the roughly 1.5 years until Windows 7 hits shelves.
No matter what kind of reluctant computer user you are, swapping to Vista just doesn’t make sense anymore. There are a few different perspectives you can look at it from. It’s hard to come up with reasons for broad groups of computer users, like gamers, business users and home users to migrate to Vista as well.
Gamers especially should be running for the hills whenever they hear the word Vista. Yes, it’s the only way you can get DirectX 10, but is that really a big enough carrot to dangle in front of gamers? Not by a long shot. While DirectX 10 delivers a significant improvement in graphics, Vista provides a significant drop off in performance, even with SP1. In fact, it’s been proven that installing SP1 could actually make your PC slower. What’s more, over a year after Vista was released, there still isn’t a compelling enough library of games that make good enough use of DirectX 10 to justify the upgrade (around 20 only if Wikipedia is to be believed). It’s no wonder gaming PC manufacturers like Alienware and NRG by Altech have only just switched over to supplying their machines with Vista.
Business users are in the same boat. Most important to them is reliability and security. But Vista isn’t any better than XP in either reliability or security. Most of the security issues with XP were fixed with SP2 and even more have been fixed with SP3. Any additional problems are more than likely to have been dealt with by third party tools and applications. Reliability is a non-contest. XP has a five-year head start. Add to this the fact that the reason SP1 was pulled from Automatic Download was an issue with Microsoft’s Dynamic RMS software used by small to medium businesses and the Vista doesn’t seem all that welcoming.
Furthermore, business users are well aware of the fact that there are still plenty of drivers and software that won’t play nice with the OS, a particular problem for small businesses requiring obscure software. Financially, it wouldn’t be a smart idea for them either. The cost of upgrading an entire company to Windows Vista can’t be justified if another operating system is just around the corner.
Even general home users have no reason to upgrade. This is the group that doesn’t mind using technology that’s not at the forefront. They use PCs for email, music, the Internet and minesweeper. Upgrading from XP to Vista will likely turn a working PC into a sloth if users have less than 2GB of memory, and it can become quite costly if they need to upgrade their PC’s specs to handle the transition on top of purchasing the OS.

the people bashing it either 1. have slower or older pcs and 2. never tried it. there is
no perfect os. not even linux.
to cjg and m$
i have a lot of experience on vista and it is total junk. it was
released only with 1 purpose to make money.
just the simple fact that they
moved things around like system tools, or items in the control panel already makes no
sense. k.i.s.s. keep it simple and stupid. for both coders and for users m$ should have
never moved everything around. keep things in the same place as xp just add more tools and
tweaks that is the way to go.
also the windows update is terrible the way it
is. the uac is a total pain in the butt. most people i do service for just answer yes all
the time to allow or ask for it to be disactivated.
also the silent call home
and 20 other silent spywares have no business being there.
also the resource
consumption is terrible.
i hope m$ figures out that all they need to do is keep
on going with xp and the way things are laid out in xp and just add more tools and tweaks.
actually no need for a totally new windows.
is this clear enough!
yes! xp is enough!!!!
i'm not one of the vista bashers so my opinion should be unbiased. my biggest objections
over vista is price. at $400, ultimate is a bit steep also the 5 versions are too much,
could cut this to two like xp pro and home keeping ultimate and home premium to replace
them. i felt it was a rushed release and considered service pack 1 overdue fixes that
should have made rtm.
despite these things i have personally had very few
problems with vista. i've used business, ultimate and enterprise extensively. i can say
actually vista'a best features are for the business customer with bdd, hal independancy,
system backup tool and more. for the everyday user vista will be lackluster as not much
improvement was made for the consumer market like aero, windows search, flip 3-d, and dx10
which to the average consumer are not the kind of
"reinvention" vista was touted
to be which made the hype less than reality.
i am a xp and vista user and i can say with confidence that i enjoy both operating
systems, i seem to be on the side of the fence where nothing as gone wrong with my vista
and it has been quite easy to use.
i do agree with the cat, too many version =
baffled consumer market
it has to go back to home and pro versions, so windows
7 home, windows 7 pro. nice and simple, an also the pricing needs to be fixed, in
australia we have to pay $700-800 for the retail, off the shelf package and i have to end
up buying my software from the us
all i can hope for is simplicity in the next
version, because if its more complex to use than vista is for the average home user (mom &
dad situation) it will be another flop in the market place
smoother than xp. xp is not bad, and is worth using it if you don't want to put up the
monies to upgrade, but is no that vista is going back to windows 3.1! ge treal guys!
until you install 3rd party security software and tweak software like vista manager.
the advances in computer technology have surpassed m$ os - vista is out of step with all
the wonderful techlologies available but has been amputated by shortsighted executives
bent on the comercial aspect to make a dollar.
the worst people are the one who defend vista claiming that yeah everyonelse is running
an old machine.. what a joke.
windows xp can run very well on a pentium 2, 3
and 4 (with single cpu core). so why the f_ck a simple os which role is to make all the
hardware and sw work together needs sooooooooooooooooooooooooo musch resource!
the thing is: it does not need to take 8gb to work correctly! nortel, ibm, universities
wont be switching any soon.. believe me. no company is gonna upgrade there pcs to
mutlicore lol for vista.. the need is simply not there! ms is loose a lot of $$$ till they
learn to make smthng backward compatible.
cjg. let me add a few more to your list. (3) they cant properly crack vista so hate it.
(4) people have invested time and $ in 3rd party eye candy for xp like skins, themes,
cursors and custom bs. (5) they know someone who has been using aol for 2 months and knows
everything about computers & he/she says vista is bad.
got to admit, i kinda like vista, it's a lot smoother than xp (after vlite-ing it to cut
out the crap)
yes, you can get add-ons and patchs to add all this to xp, but
seems a lot of hassle.
btw, if you thing the activation on vista is bad, wait
until windows 7.....
stupid noob a lot of it experts don't like vista
after i installed sp1, i must say perormance was the lowest. even with 2.5 ram vista
needs more. i think gates must return our money.
i believe he did not have time
to copy other products. gates go and copy linux. wow effect is dead is costing us.
ms must provide free windows 7 for all the vista users or if we must get 80% of our
money back.
vista is great, so ignore my above post
people must have issues with the systems to dislike vista so much.
i have vista
running on an old acer aspire p4 3 gig 2.5 gig ram and it runs fine, i am very happy with
vista..
i suggest those who assume vista uses too much ram to check there
drivers installed and make there the right ones for vista...
on vista here, i
am only useing 30% of 2.5 gig ram and thats with nortons running in the background. which
is more or less the same amount being used on xp when i had that installed...
this articles exist for a reason... as much as you like vista.. there are real reasons
for the existence of these articles and poor vista adoptance.
facts speack for
themselves!!
...and that's all there is to it.
you want facts? fine
fact......we heard this same stuff about xp in 2001. it was
slow on older systems, you needed to run run an upgrade advisor to see if your hardware
was compatible.
fact......xp in 2001 had horrible security(proof? xp sp2 had to be
released to shore up all the security flaws in the os)
fact......xp adoption rate was
less then 10 percent a year after xp rtm'ed (crn ,oct 02)
thos are just some facts
about the release of vista as compared to xp. i use xp as well as vista ultimate (x64) and
both are reliable as well as stable operating systems.
on a side note; addressing one
of the above comments on backwards compatibility; you try writing on operating system that
is compatible with literally millions on pc configuations and see how well you do!
that is my rant! thanks for reading!
sounds like you are a very naive person, i go by what is sitting in front of me, not
bullshit written by anti microft people..
xp ?? wtf?? go seriously dudes that os is 8 years old wtf are you saying get real we are
at 2008 now, vista rules
mac osx ;)
i have been lurking in this forum for a while and it never ceases to amaze me with the
comments given, "it here so use it", "over 140 million have been sold", "just get
over it" and the likes. all of these are emotional not factual replies. i can certainly
appreciate your zeal to defend but do not discount others who differ and are trying to
present facts to the contrary. personally, i have tried and have been trying to use vista
x32. while no major faults or bod i do not see any clear and major advantage of this os
over my current xp w/sp3. while i like the aero and the transparency of the windows that
in itself is not worth $400.00. while memory management above 4meg is important so some, i
believe the vast majority could care less - myself included (running 3 meg). bottom line,
xp (for me) is doing everything (business apps, video apps, email, etc) for me at an
acceptable speed and manor. there is no whoooooo feature(s) in vista that warrant the
average person to incur the cost not only of upgraded machines or parts plus the cost of
the software itself. just my .02
after my vista installation unlikely others it has boosted my system.as my computer
starts in 30sec which is a better speed than xp(both sp2& sp3).
may be because my
hardware is built to support vista.
people really do need to stop beating up on vista!! i have a 5 year old laptop with 2gb,
160gb hd, its a cheap economy toshiba satellite and it runs vista ultimate just fine! in
fact it runs faster with vista than it ever did with xp. o and by the way aero looks great
on my laptop with a radeon xpress 200 intergrated card. great job for vista!! people need
to learn what they are doing before they judge
vista is not game over, xp is lose lololololol lmao at you prícks
for all you morons who claim vista is "just fine", you either use your computer to
check your e-mail and surf the occasional webpage or you are just plain stupid.
even microsoft has given up on vista. i've worked with their engineering level
development people trying to resolve a ton of issues to see whether we could actually roll
it out at a very large pharma company. if you heard what some of their own development
people had to say about it, you'd format your drive and reinstall xp.
i simple think vista is good. i have used xp, mac os x, leopard and linux but i think
that vista is the best. do you know what i think that people who are complaining they
either have a shit people for example a 64 mb graphics card, 512mb ram and a shit
processor like intel pentuim iii. i have a new pc which came with windows vista and you
know what i have had no problems with it what so ever. it could be because my specs are
high.

my specs are:-
nvidia 8600gt
intel quad core processor
3gb ram
1tb hard drive
i have all the latest games and i can play them all at top
settings. assasins creed = direct x 10, top settings e.g. maximum resolution.
if you want a debate im ready for it. leave your comment and i will respond to it asap !!!
all this raving about xp sp3. it does nothing than give you the 92 updates since service
pack 2..
vista works great if you got the right hardware. if you wanna use old
hardware then of course stick to xp. dont knock the new stuff cos your outdated pc's wont
handle it. if we all did that we would all still be using windows 3.1, after all it uses
less resources than 95, which uses less resources than 98, which uses less resources than
2000 which uses less resources than xp. i think you vista bashers get the idea by now...
this crap is getting way too old. stick to your xp and enjoy your content for an old os.
as for some of us, vista has been great, no blue screen...ever! i've had it since day one
and i've never had any major problems. i game, work on it, photoshop...whatever i want
and i'm very satisfied.
a footnote to those so called experts who work on computers
and say vista **su
cks** this and that...u need to get more schooling. you don't
know squat. i've built numerous systems for customers and family and they are very
happy. so check yourself fool before making a false claim of being a geek god!
all my family and friends are morons also and they're all happy with vista as well.
if vista is so good, well then keep using it and shut up.
this is going to go on right until win 7 come out isn't it?
considering the
price some(!) of you paid for vista (nothing!) don't complain....
really, how
many people here a have a full, shop bought legit copy of vista, or even xp hmmmmmm?
on low end hardware xp,
on high end hardware with over 4gigs of ram vista 64bit.
vista 32bit is a joke, live with it, you 12 year old fan bois
you know i read all the ups and downs of xp and vista. its taken three service packes to
help xp the get it to the point it is now. but lets face up to it xp was a whole new era
in windows os. it ran by itself without dos. there was much more changed from win98 to
winxp so we expected allot hick-ups. now what we have, from what the people can say and the
tech "do" say, is a very good os in xp. now when it comes to vista "what happened?"
"did microsoft forget all they learned from xp?" you would figure that given almost 5
years thats microsoft could setup another os on the heels of xp learning in strides to
build a better os. but noooo! ... make it a resource hog ... make it have driver issues
... make it different!! why make it so different from the required substance that xp
drives on that microsoft looks like their starting with a new os, not following one.
hi all. i am running a dual boot pc with xp x64 and vista x64. i use xp for hardware
intensive apps like music software and gaming and vista for general pc use like e-mail,
internet, publishing, etc.
vista runs very well, but then i am running a quad
core cpu and have 5gb ram. i have run vista on lesser machines and it seemed ok too, i
guess in the end its what you want to do with it. i recommend dual boot for the best of
both worlds.
i have a new dell xps-720 quad core with vista ultimate. right out of the box vista has
been unstable, media player locks up, media center locks up, cant play avi files, etc.
microsoft has "workarounds" but not fixes.
vista is crapware.
i have dell
dimebsion 8200 running xp pro and it has been the workhorse that runs anything i give it,
and while it is memory limited. it has been more reliable than the new machine running
vista.
well no wonders vista runs like crap, dell and many oem pc's are known to have crapware
installed, no wonders its bad.
well most avi's need codecs, they are not install on vista, for the simple reason they
are third party software...
i totally disagree with the writer . thats your own opinion about vista putting it up
here to poison other people minds. people new to the computer world will grab your
taunts. why dont you make a good os yourself let us enjoy it and have a reason to crap
microsoft . from my experience no os work 100 % perfect on all machines and if u new to
the computer or just use it very casual , you will get frequent crashes even when you
think you not doing nothing wrong . my advise on vista for newbies or complaining people -
get the latest vista sp1 for a start - then make sure u turn off uac . if you understand
uac its real tight security that can get very nagging but keeps you as safe .. so you
choose ... feels more like xp when its off for xp lovers . i vlite my os how i want it so
that can be my reason of not getting no vista stress people talking about .
http://www.vlite.net/ . just try it .
