Yesterday, Grisoft announced that a new version of AVG Antivirus Free would be released today, April 24, that was supposed to come with several new functions beside the ones already included in the application

The new AVG Free 8.0 is compatible with most Windows versions, including here Windows 2000, Windows XP/x64 Edition and Windows Vista/x64 Edition. Moreover, the application is available in a large set of languages including English, Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Serbian and Spanish. Here are the main functions of the application, as published by Grisoft on the official page of the newly-released program: - Anti-Virus: protection against viruses, worms and trojans - Anti-Spyware: protection against spyware, adware and identity-theft - Anti-Rootkit: protection against hidden threats (rootkits) - Web Shield & LinkScanner: protection against malicious websites With the release of AVG Free 8.0, we are underscoring our belief that all computer users, regardless of their computer usage needs, have the right to a safe and worry-free computing experience," says Karel Obluk, chief technology officer at AVG Technologies. "However, it is important for users to remember that AVG Free does not protect against the full range of today’s web-borne threats. For complete protection, users should consider AVG’s commercial products, which scan for and block threats before they can infect the computer or disrupt the user experience." Once again, if you want to download this new release of AVG Antivirus Free, namely the 8.0 edition, you can take it straight from our website. Download:

Quickie review

By pei_boy on 25.04.2008 - 02:04
i just downloaded this for a new install not knowing it had been updated. it adds tons of bloat and unwanted (imo) that can not be turned off or can be turned off but put the program into a permenant state of alert.

crap.

Thanks a lot

By Batavian on 25.04.2008 - 02:04
avg is the best free anti-virus out there. thanks for the notice.

Pile of Poo

By luminar on 25.04.2008 - 02:04
as a long time avg user i had to try this. what a mistake. i'd rather have a virus then this. it used over 60 megs of memory just to sit there and up to 80% of cpu as it, i assume, silently scanned my pc every now and then, i tried to shut it down and it froze my pc solid.
really it did everything i expect a virus to do.

Avast

By Britain on 25.04.2008 - 05:04
avast is one of the best free softwares out there.

I prefer.....

By Skorpion on 25.04.2008 - 06:04
nod32. it doesn't eat your memory and updates its database several times a day.

Thanx

By Amirz on 25.04.2008 - 06:04
thankz. avg the best

Avira Antivir Premium is the best

By anonymous on 25.04.2008 - 06:04
look for av-comparatives.org and av-test.org to see the test results

point of view

By geo on 25.04.2008 - 14:04
avg for me still remains the best av program there is. it's kept me virus free for years which is all i want an av program to do and it does this without hogging resources.
sure other av programs may detect an obscure virus i'm never going to get sooner then avg but common sense and avg wins every time.

having said that, this latest offering from avg is awful. i can only assume it's aimed at vista users who by now are used to bloat and their pc resources being eaten up. it has a shinny new interface aswell to keep them happy.

Downlload link not working

By AVG no longer good!! on 25.04.2008 - 17:04
the toolbar is making me cringe.... all the way!!!

norton 360

By uzkingz on 25.04.2008 - 19:04
the best antivirus out is norton 360. and yes it does consume cpu and resources. but that why it protects your computer 100% never got a virus for like 2 years and i'v downloaded viruses before and tested out nortons security, i had kaspersky, nod32, nod32 smart security, norton internet security 2007, 08, anti vira, bit defender. and by far norton 360 best security. also it's not just security, it cleans your computer and optimises disk, with built in defragmentater. there are a lot more nice options and it also updates fast without any hastle or restarting computer, only somtimes. so it's the best end of story.

Free AVG

By Bing on 25.04.2008 - 22:04
best av program is linux :)

Linux

By geo on 25.04.2008 - 22:04
lol. yes linux is the best av mainly because linux users are smart and would never download a virus just to test their av program as uzkingz does.
thank god for people like uzkingz, without them i'd be out of a job.

You know WHY Linux is the best AV? No-one uses it

By Will on 26.04.2008 - 00:04
who would bother to create a virus for linux if no one even can run a program on it. linux is shit and it would be pointless to create a virus just for linux cause most of the people who use it have no job and no money (apart from dudes who like to use four monitors such as my boss). face it, windows is the primary target then macs. for a good defence against viruses use avast (64-bit) or panda (32-bit) and vista. xd

To improve performance of 8.0

By Batavian on 26.04.2008 - 03:04
you can disable the new linkscanner feature. this should help speed up your browsing.

Kaspersky

By Alfa on 26.04.2008 - 12:04
i have tried almost all of major anit-virus progs, from bitdeffender to norton and i have to say that kaspersky seems to be one of the best (if not the best) one. it is not larg, consumes not too much memory and resources and it does what it has to be done.
p.s. it is about kis (kaspersky internet security) version 7. there are some issues with the new version(8), but it is a beta yet.

With the amount of False Positives Kaspersky returns...

By Kernel on 26.04.2008 - 13:04
the anti-virus itself is a virus.

Yeah kernel...

By Robert on 26.04.2008 - 15:04
but the fault is to small minded peopple that think avs that return more results are better... so some av companies like kaspersky make them return more infected files even if they are not infected in reality...
the same old scam as many reg cleaners have been doing for years...

I like AVG again - now that I found a way to remove the TB

By Peter on 26.04.2008 - 22:04
yes, finally got to remove the toolbar from the unattended install... fortunately there was a way :)

No rootkit in free version

By buzz123 on 27.04.2008 - 02:04
according to their site, there is no antirootkit ion free version

I really hate Kaspersky also...

By Brian on 27.04.2008 - 15:04
because kaspersky, i deleted 3 files that were flagged as virus..
because of that, one program that i used later stoped working... which caused me a great deal of trouble!

later i found that kaspersky alerts for those files were false positives - but the damage was already done!

I don't like AVs that make false positives either!

By Rick on 28.04.2008 - 04:04
they are simply ridiculous and really show their dev's intentions to only make money from uneducated peopple...
yeah i've heard kaspersky is quickly becoming the king of false positives... not that i use it anyway!!! there are much more thrust worthy avs out there.

FREE AVG version 8.0 WONT PLAY WITH XP Pro

By Ivan on 28.04.2008 - 15:04
hello,
i have been using free avg version 7.5 (and other versions prior to this) happily and fault free for some considerable time.
however, grisoft have changed the free anti virus product and version 8.0 refuses to work happily with my copy of windows xp pro. this is due to a new updated version of the update manager software, plus new types of virus definitions, the resident shield failed to load on all occations. very sadly, version 8.0 had to be removed totally from my machine.

note: for anyone else who encounters the same problem as myself. i solved this matter by installing the free product antivir version 8.0 this program has all the precise same features & functions as avg.

see:- http://free-av.com

hope that helps? ps: antivir installed and works perfectly inclusing the resident shield componnents too. free uodates too.

kind regards ivan

note: not all upgrades are equal or mean a better product.

Ivan is a noob!!! If AVG didn't work on XP Pro...

By Decker on 28.04.2008 - 18:04
grisoft would be out of business by now!!!

of course avg 8 works on xp pro - i'm using it right now!!!

Replying to decker RE: AVG

By Ivan on 28.04.2008 - 18:04
hi decker,

i should have said xp pro without ms sp2 bloat-ware installed. and as i have 19 years of it experience and worked & been paid a good salary as a sys admins i hardly think i qualify as a noob!! as you so pathetically put it.
